Our story
Our story began in the fall of 2017 with our founder, Martine Laforest, who combined two of her passions: aquarium keeping and gardening.
Over the years, Martine developed several prototypes of different sizes and capacities, testing a variety of vegetables and fruits at home. Her dream was to create a larger residential aquaponics garden that would blend beautifully into modern living spaces.
But beyond innovation and design, Martine has a deep desire to share the joy of gardening in an eco-responsible way — making it accessible to all, year-round.
That’s how Onuà World was born: with the mission to cultivate not only plants, but awareness, connection, and sustainability.
The Origin and Meaning of Onuà World
The name "Onuà World" originates from the Hawaiian word "Honua," which signifies the Earth in its entirety. For aesthetic reasons, the "H" was removed, thus giving birth to Onuà. "Onuà World" symbolizes our responsibility to the planet and our belief that every action matters for a better world.
The founder
The founder, Martine Laforest, is a French-Canadian businesswoman with over 30 years of experience. She has worked with major international corporations, all in the manufacturing field. She has founded several businesses and assisted others. Creative, generous at heart, self-taught, and passionate about the well-being of humans and nature, she wants to contribute in her own way to preserving our beautiful Earth for future generations.
The values that guide Onuà World are as follows:
Accessibility – Inclusive gardens designed for everyone, simple to use all year long.
Joy & Learning – Touch, taste, discover, and understand life — a garden as a living classroom.
Social Impact – Bringing moments of joy, pride, and connection to schools, senior residences, and communities.
Food Autonomy – Making local spaces meaningful by supporting healthy and educational food production.
Our Commitment to the Environment
At Onuà World, we’re committed to protecting the planet — both through how we build our gardens and why we create them. We work with existing manufacturers to avoid building new factories, reducing our environmental footprint. But our impact goes further: each aquaponic garden helps people understand how ecosystems work and inspires them to grow food more responsibly.
By using and sharing this way of gardening, our users become part of a movement — one that nurtures the Earth and future generations.
